nanoComposix, Inc. Receives a Phase II AF SBIR to Evaluate the Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials

SAN DIEGO, CA. -January 23, 2008- nanoComposix, Inc, a privately held nanomaterials research company, announced today that it has been awarded a $750,000 Phase II Small Business Innovative Research Grant from the NSF.

The project will investigate the environmental, safety, and health implications of manufactured nanomaterials. In collaboration with a variety of leading nanotoxicology researchers, research will be performed with a standardized set of highly characterized nanomaterials. The effectiveness of personal protective equipment for providing a barrier to nanomaterial exposure will be evaluated.  A comprehensive handbook for individuals who work with nanomaterials will be prepared and made publically available to offer guidance on the safety, handling and exposure risks of nanomaterials.

"The potential for government and civilian workers to be exposed to nanomaterials is rapidly increasing.  It is imperative that the exposure risk and toxicity of nanomaterials are quantified before products with nanoscale components are widely commercialized and distributed.  This project will identify factors that influence the generation, dispersion, and deposition of nanomaterials in the workplace.", said Dr. Steven Oldenburg, the principal investigator of the project.

nanoComposix is a nanotechnology-based research company that fabricates, characterizes, and develops applications for nanoparticles. The company was founded in 2004 and is based in San Diego, CA.
